Main Entrance to the Ark Fortress
Main Entrance to the Ark Fortress in Bukhara, Uzbekistan
The main entrance to the Ark Fortress is located in the historic center of Bukhara, at the foot of the ancient citadel that long served as the residence of Bukhara’s rulers. It is this entrance that creates the most recognizable image of the Ark: powerful towers on either side, a high portal, and the ascent leading into the fortress.
The modern design of the entrance dates to the late 19th century. The main gate is framed by two massive towers connected by an upper gallery. In the upper section there were rooms and open platforms for the guard, emphasizing not only the ceremonial but also the defensive function of the entrance.
A sloping ramp leads to the gates, beyond which begins a long covered passage into the inner part of the citadel. Along this corridor were service and utility rooms, as well as prison cells. This layout shows that the entrance was part of a complex system of control and everyday life within the fortress.
For tourists, the main entrance is interesting as one of the key elements of the Ark and as a convenient point for getting acquainted with the history of Bukhara. Here, the features of the citadel’s later appearance are clearly visible, and the entrance itself helps one imagine how the emir’s residence was arranged and how movement within the fortress was organized.

Towers, ramp, and covered passage into the heart of the citadel
When exploring the main entrance, it is worth paying attention to the combination of representativeness and practicality. The steep ascent to the gates slowed movement and made the entrance easier to control, while the massive side towers strengthened the defenses. From the outside, the composition of the facade is especially easy to read, and it has become one of the most recognizable in Bukhara.
After passing through the gates, visitors walk along a long covered corridor, which is itself an important part of the route. On its sides were service rooms connected with guarding and maintaining the fortress. This passage helps to better understand that the Ark was not only a fortification, but also an administrative center with a clearly organized internal space.
Inside the citadel, visitors can continue exploring the surviving structures, including the Jome Cathedral Mosque and the museum exhibitions on the grounds of the Ark. Nearby are Bukhara’s Registan Square, the Bolo-Hauz Mosque, and other monuments of the historic center, all of which are easy to reach on foot.
The easiest way to get here is on foot or by taxi from the center of Bukhara, as the Ark Fortress is located within the old city. The main sightseeing route through the citadel usually begins at the entrance, so it is best to allow time not only for photos of the facade but also for visiting the inner grounds.
