Azizie Mosque

Azizie Mosque in Konya, Turkey - late Ottoman Baroque building

Azizie Mosque is located in the historic commercial quarter of the Karatay district, in the center of Konya, near the Bedesten market and the bazaar stalls by the Mevlana Museum. It is easy to recognize by its late Ottoman appearance, which noticeably differs from the city’s medieval Seljuk monuments.

The first building on this site was erected in 1676 by order of Damat Mustafa Pasha. After a major fire in 1867 the mosque was rebuilt at the initiative of Pertevniyal Valide Sultan, mother of Sultan Abdulaziz, and the works were completed in 1874. The present structure belongs to the period of Ottoman Baroque with Rococo elements.

The building is made of ashlar stone and is distinguished by very tall arched windows that occupy a large part of the façades. The central space is covered by a large dome, while the main exterior feature is two slender minarets with rich stone carving and shaped balconies. Inside, plant motifs typical of the second half of the 19th century have been preserved; the mihrab and minbar are made of stone.

The mosque functions as a place of worship. Visitors should take prayer times into account, enter outside of congregational prayers, remove their shoes at the entrance and observe the accepted dress code.

Azizie Mosque

Late Ottoman Baroque accent among the rows of the Bedesten

From the outside, the unusually tall windows and elegant minarets attract attention, their stone details visible from the narrow streets around the Bedesten. If you walk around the building you can study the portals and cornice profiles, where Baroque forms combine with traditional Ottoman motifs.

Inside the space is filled with light thanks to the large openings. Visitors will see decorative painting with plant motifs on the walls and the dome's pendentives, a stone mihrab with delicate detailing and a carefully executed minbar. While visiting, behave quietly, avoid disturbing worshippers and refrain from photographing people without their consent.

The mosque is within walking distance of the Mevlana Museum and the historic Bedesten market; nearby are also the Selimiye Mosque by the Mevlana Museum and Alaeddin Hill with its namesake mosque. It makes a convenient short stop during a walk through the old center.

The easiest approach is on foot from the Mevlana Museum in 5-10 minutes, passing through the rows of the Bedesten; from any part of Konya's central quarters the route is short.
