Aziziye Mosque

Aziziye Mosque in Konya, Turkey - late Ottoman architecture

Aziziye Mosque is located in the center of Konya, in the Karatay district, among shopping streets near the Bedesten Market and not far from the Mevlana Museum. For visitors, it is one of the most notable Ottoman monuments in the old part of the city. Against the backdrop of Konya's Seljuk buildings, it stands out with its later appearance and decorative facade finishes.

The first mosque on this site was built in the 17th century. After a major fire in the second half of the 19th century, the building was restored, and the mosque acquired its present appearance in 1874. This phase is associated with the patronage of Pertevniyal Valide Sultan, the mother of Sultan Abdulaziz, from whose name the mosque derives its own.

The building is made of cut stone and belongs to late Ottoman architecture with Baroque and Rococo features. It is easy to recognize by its tall arched windows, large dome, and two slender minarets with decorative stone carvings. Inside, ornaments from the second half of the 19th century have been preserved, while the mihrab and minbar are made of stone.

Today, Aziziye Mosque remains an active religious site and is also of interest to those studying the architecture and urban history of Konya. It is easy to include in a walk through the historic center, especially together with a visit to the Mevlana Museum, the markets, and the old commercial quarters.

Aziziye Mosque

A late Ottoman mosque among Konya's old markets

From the outside, the tall facades with large windows attract attention, allowing plenty of light into the prayer hall. Unlike the city's more austere early monuments, decorative elements of the late Ottoman period are noticeable here - fluid forms, stone carvings, and more elaborate detailing. The two minarets are especially striking and are clearly visible from the neighboring shopping streets.

Inside, visitors will see a spacious hall beneath the dome, a mihrab, a minbar, and characteristic 19th-century floral ornamentation. A visit usually takes little time, but it helps to better understand how Konya's architectural appearance changed after the Seljuk period. Since the mosque is active, tourists should come outside prayer times, remove their shoes before entering, and choose modest clothing.

Nearby are the Bedesten Market, bazaar rows, and the Mevlana Museum, so a visit can easily be combined with a walk through the city's historic center. In this area, it is also easy to find small shops, traditional trading courtyards, and other monuments of old Konya.

The mosque is easy to reach on foot from the Mevlana Museum or from the central part of Konya. If traveling by public transport, the easiest reference points are the stops near the museum and the old bazaar, from where only a short walk remains to the mosque.
