Bolo-Hauz Mosque and Minaret

Bolo-Hauz Mosque and Minaret in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

The Bolo-Hauz Mosque and Minaret are located in the center of Bukhara, on Registan Square, opposite the Ark Fortress. This is one of the notable architectural complexes of the old city: it includes a mosque, a small hauz pond, and a minaret from the early 20th century. The complex is part of the historic urban fabric of Bukhara, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The mosque was built in the early 18th century and for a long time remained one of the important Friday mosques of Bukhara. It is connected with the court life of the Bukhara emirs, who visited it during official ceremonies. Thanks to its location near the Ark and the central square, the complex conveys well the organization of public space in old Bukhara.

The main feature of Bolo-Hauz is the tall iwan with a row of carved wooden columns. Behind the open section is an enclosed prayer hall used during the cold season. The minaret, built in 1917, completed the ensemble and gave it a more finished appearance. The decoration shows wood carving, paintings, and decorative details traditional for Bukhara from the late 19th to early 20th century.

For tourists, Bolo-Hauz is interesting as a well-preserved example of Bukhara's religious architecture and as part of the historic center, where it is convenient to see several important monuments at once. Visitors come here to see the famous columned iwan, the old city square, and one of the characteristic ensembles of Bukhara architecture.

During your visit, it is worth paying attention to the front iwan - it is this feature that makes the mosque easily recognizable. Wooden columns with carved capitals and bases support a painted ceiling, and the facade composition is especially well viewed from the square side. The small hauz in front of the mosque recalls the old system of urban ponds, which were an important part of everyday life in Bukhara.

Inside, the decorative elements from a later period are of interest: paintings, ornaments, and finishes characteristic of Bukhara masters of the 19th to early 20th century. This is not the largest religious monument in the city, but it clearly shows how open iwans, winter halls, and ceremonial facade decoration were combined in Bukhara.

Bolo-Hauz is usually visited together with the nearby monuments of the historic center. The Ark Fortress, Registan Square, and other sites of old Bukhara are located nearby, so the visit can easily be included in a walking route through the city center.

The easiest way to reach the complex is on foot through the historic center of Bukhara, using the Ark Fortress as a landmark - the mosque is located directly opposite it. When visiting an active religious monument, it is advisable to wear modest clothing and keep quiet if prayers are taking place inside.
