Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah
Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah in Bukhara, Uzbekistan
The Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah is located in the center of Bukhara, on the square by the Lyabi-Hauz pond, as part of one of the city's most famous historical ensembles. The building was erected in 1622-1623 by order of Nadir Divan-Begi, a high-ranking official at the Bukhara court. Like the entire historical center of Bukhara, the monument is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site area.
Researchers believe that the structure was not originally built as an educational institution, but was later adapted into a madrasah. This explains some features of the layout that distinguish it from the more traditional Muslim schools of the region. For tourists, it is an interesting example of how the function of buildings changed in old Bukhara and how architecture adapted to new needs.
The main facade is especially famous for its unusual decoration. On the portal, you can see mosaic images of birds, deer, and a sun disk - a rare motif in the Islamic architecture of Central Asia, where geometric and floral ornaments were more commonly used. Thanks to this design, the madrasah is easy to recognize among Bukhara's other landmarks.
Today, the Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah is interesting not only as a separate building, but also as part of the unified urban space around Lyabi-Hauz. People come here to examine the details of the facade, walk through the old streets, and combine a visit to the monument with nearby historical buildings in the city center.

Rare figurative decoration on a 17th-century facade
The main feature that usually attracts visitors' attention is the tall portal with colorful cladding and narrative images that differ noticeably from the more restrained decoration of many other madrasahs in Bukhara. The best way to view the facade is from a short distance away on Lyabi-Hauz Square: this gives a clear view of the portal composition, the majolica patterns, and the building's overall proportions.
Inside the madrasah, you can see a courtyard typical of such buildings, surrounded by arched niches and former hujra cells. The space gives an idea of the structure of Bukhara's educational and public buildings in the 17th century. During your visit, it is worth paying attention to the contrast between the ceremonial facade and the calmer interior design.
A visit to the madrasah is easy to combine with a walk around the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble, where the Nadir Divan-Begi khanqah and the Kukeldash Madrasah are located nearby. The trading domes of old Bukhara and other landmarks of the historical center are also close by.
The madrasah is usually reached on foot through the old city, as it is located in the central part of Bukhara and is included in popular walking routes. If you are taking a taxi, it is more convenient to ask to be dropped off at Lyabi-Hauz, from where the building is only a few minutes' walk away.
