Nadir Divan-Begi Khanqah

Nadir Divan-Begi Khanqah in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Nadir Divan-Begi Khanqah is located in the historic center of Bukhara, by the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble - one of the most famous public spaces in the old city. The building was constructed in 1619-1620 by order of Nadir Divan-Begi, a statesman of the Ashtarkhanid era. The khanqah is part of a unified architectural complex together with the madrasa and the pond, so it is convenient to visit while walking through this part of Bukhara.

By its purpose, the khanqah served as a place for gatherings, prayer, and the stay of dervishes and Sufis. At the center is a large domed hall - the zikr-khana, intended for collective religious practices. The interior space is organized around this hall, and in the walls and corners there are hujras - small rooms for seclusion and accommodation.

From an architectural point of view, the building is notable for its strict and balanced composition. The main portal stands out with its elongated proportions, while the facades are decorated in a relatively restrained manner: here you can see niches, epigraphic decor, and corner elements characteristic of Bukhara architecture. In addition to the main entrance, the khanqah has two side portals, which emphasizes its connection with the surrounding urban development.

For tourists, this place is interesting not only as an early 17th-century monument, but also as part of the living historical environment of Bukhara. The khanqah helps to better understand how religious and public spaces were arranged in the city, and its location next to Lyabi-Hauz makes it possible to combine a visit to the building with other well-known monuments of old Bukhara.

Nadir Divan-Begi Khanqah

Domed hall for Sufi gatherings by Lyabi-Hauz

During your visit, it is worth paying attention to the central hall, which is known for its good acoustics. It was here that collective prayers and zikr - a ritual practice associated with the Sufi tradition - took place. The space feels different from that of a madrasa or mosque: it was created not for study, but for gatherings, spiritual conversations, and seclusion.

From the outside, the high portal, restrained decor, and the overall monumentality of the building are most noticeable. There is no excessive lavishness in the decoration, so attention is focused on the proportions, arches, and the structure of the facade. If you walk around the khanqah from different sides, you can see additional entrances and better understand how it was integrated into the ensemble of the square and the adjacent streets.

A visit is usually combined with a walk around Lyabi-Hauz, where the Kukeldash Madrasa and Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasa are located nearby. This part of old Bukhara is convenient for a walking route: within a short walk there are trading domes, mosques, and other monuments of the historic center.

The easiest way to get here is on foot through the old city from Bukhara's main tourist streets or by taxi to the Lyabi-Hauz area. It is better to come during daylight hours, when it is easier to view the facades and architectural details.
