Clock Tower of Ankara Castle
Clock Tower of Ankara Castle in Ankara, Turkey
The Clock Tower of Ankara Castle is located in the historic center of Ankara, within the grounds of Ankara Castle, next to the Parmak Kapisi Gate, which leads to the inner citadel, Ic Kale. Because of the tower, this gate is also called Saatli Kapi - the “Clock Gate.” It is one of the notable landmarks within the castle complex, associated with its later historical development.
The tower has an octagonal plan and is easily recognizable by its upper tier with arched windows. Beneath one of the openings is a round clock face, from which the structure takes its name. In both form and location, the tower stands out against the backdrop of the massive fortress walls and the residential buildings inside the citadel.
For visitors, the tower is primarily of interest as part of a walk through Ankara Castle. It helps illustrate how the appearance of the fortress changed in later periods, when the defensive space was supplemented with civic and urban elements. Visiting the tower can easily be combined with a stroll through the narrow streets of Ic Kale and taking in panoramic views of the city.

The tower is usually viewed from the outside while walking through the castle grounds. Its octagonal shape, the arched openings of the upper tier, and the light-colored clock face set beneath one of the windows are especially noticeable. It is not a separate museum site, but rather an architectural feature of the fortress ensemble that can be conveniently seen on the way to the inner gate.
The area around the tower is notable for its preserved historic setting: stone walls, gate passages, old houses, and narrow streets create a cohesive image of the citadel. Visitors often stop here to examine the masonry, the gate details, and to take photographs against the backdrop of the fortress and the city slopes.
Nearby are Ankara Castle itself, the old quarters of Ankara, as well as the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which can be reached on foot. The castle is usually reached by taxi or bus from central Ankara, with the final section along uphill streets.
