Derinkuyu Underground City

Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia, Turkey

Derinkuyu Underground City is located in the Derinkuyu district of Cappadocia, in Nevsehir Province, roughly south of the main tourist routes around Goreme. It is one of the best-known and largest underground complexes in the region, carved into layers of soft volcanic tuff. Its Turkish name is translated as “deep well,” which aptly reflects the structure of this multi-level site.

The exact date of the earliest chambers is unknown. Researchers associate the first stages of the use of underground spaces with ancient periods, while the major expansion of the complex is linked to the Byzantine era, when such shelters were especially important during raids and military instability. The underground city allowed local residents to take refuge for extended periods thanks to the well-planned organization of its interior spaces.

Inside, living quarters, storerooms, kitchens, stables, supply storage areas, workshops, wineries, and chapels have been discovered. Some passages are very narrow and low, and entrances on certain levels could be sealed with heavy circular stone doors. A system of ventilation shafts and wells provided access to air and water, making long stays underground possible.

Today, Derinkuyu is interesting not only for its scale, but also for how clearly it illustrates the everyday side of life in an underground refuge. Only part of the levels is open to visitors, but even that is enough to imagine the complexity of the entire complex. When visiting, it is worth keeping in mind the steep descents, uneven floors, and tight sections - these may be uncomfortable for people with claustrophobia or limited mobility.

Multi-level passageways, shafts, and stone doors underground

The route through Derinkuyu passes through a network of corridors and chambers, where you can see how different areas of the underground city were arranged. On the accessible levels, visitors are usually shown utility rooms, sections with ventilation shafts, places for storing supplies, religious spaces, and rooms associated with communal life. Especially notable are the round stone doors used to block passageways in case of danger.

The visit requires attention: in some places the passageways are low, the stairs and descents are steep, and the temperature underground is usually lower than on the surface. It is best to wear comfortable shoes with non-slip soles and assess in advance whether you are comfortable being in an enclosed space. For a full visit, at least half an hour is usually recommended, and during busy times delays are possible in narrow sections.

Derinkuyu is often visited together with other places in southern Cappadocia: nearby are Kaymakli Underground City, the Ihlara Valley, and the Selime monastic complex. Such a trip allows you to see not only underground architecture, but also rock-cut churches, canyons, and the rural landscapes of the region.

The easiest way to get here is by car or as part of a tour from Goreme, Uchisar, or Nevsehir; there is also bus service to Derinkuyu from nearby towns. Before your visit, it is useful to check the current opening hours and visiting rules.
