Duden Waterfalls

Duden Waterfalls - Antalya, Turkey

The Duden Waterfalls are one of Antalya's most notable natural attractions. The complex is formed by the Duden River and includes several cascades within the city limits. For visitors, the two main highlights are the Upper Duden and the Lower Duden.

The Upper Duden is located north of Antalya's center, in the green area of the Kepez district. There are trails and footbridges, with pathways leading to grottoes behind the water curtain, where you can view the flow from the inside. Surfaces can be wet and slippery in places - sturdy, non-slip shoes are essential.

The Lower Duden sits on the coastal cliffs at Lara and is also known as Karpuzkaldiran. The water plunges directly into the Mediterranean from about 40 m, so the waterfall is impressive both from land and from sea - sightseeing boats approach it during coastal cruises.

The waterfalls can be visited year-round, with the highest flow in spring and after rain. In high season it is more comfortable to come in the morning or later in the evening. The viewing platforms in the coastal park at the Lower Duden are freely accessible, while access to the Upper Duden park and boat trips are charged. Both sites are within Antalya, with signs and parking at the entrances; sections with steps and grotto entrances at the Upper Duden may be difficult for visitors with limited mobility.

Where to view the Duden - best angles and walks

The Upper Duden offers the rare chance to go behind the water wall: a series of short passages leads to niches and small grottoes, where you can see the stream from the other side. The route has several photo points at different heights, and under the shade of plane and conifer trees it's a good place to rest on a hot day.

The Lower Duden is best seen from the platforms in the Duden coastal park on the edge of Lara's cliffs. In sunny weather a rainbow often appears at the base, and with calm seas sightseeing boats come close enough to feel the spray and photograph the waterfall from sea level.

Things to do: take panoramic shots from the viewpoints, walk along the cliff edge and combine a visit to the Lower Duden with a short boat trip along the coast. Along the way you can easily drop by the Old Town Kaleici and Karaalioglu Park, and nature lovers should note the Kursunlu Waterfall northeast of Antalya.

How to get there: from Antalya's center the Upper Duden is about 10-12 km to the north toward Kepez, and the Lower is about 8 km to the southeast toward Lara; taxis, car-sharing and city buses are convenient, and sightseeing boats from the Kaleici harbor also serve the Lower Duden.
