Lycian Tombs in Fethiye
Lycian Tombs in Fethiye, Fethiye, Turkey
The Lycian Tombs in Fethiye are located on the slope of a cliff above the central part of the city, near the old quarter and the waterfront. This is one of the main ancient monuments of Fethiye, associated with ancient Telmessos - an important city of Lycia. The necropolis is clearly visible from different points in the city thanks to its elevated position.
Most of the well-known rock-cut burials date to the classical period of Lycian history, primarily to the 4th century BC. The tombs are carved directly into the rock and designed in different ways: some have monumental facades with columns and triangular pediments, while others look much simpler. This form of burial is characteristic of Lycia and reflects local ideas about status and memory.
The most famous tomb in the complex is the Tomb of Amyntas, on whose facade an ancient Greek inscription has been preserved. The climb to the monument takes little time, and from the top there is a wide view of the city of Fethiye, the marina, and part of the bay. For this reason, the site is of interest not only to those interested in archaeology, but also to those who want to see the city from a high vantage point.
A visit is usually possible with an entrance ticket, and the best time for the climb is in the morning or closer to the evening, when it is less hot. It is worth choosing comfortable shoes for the walk, as the route passes over stairs and rocky sections. If you want to add to your visit, after seeing the tombs you can stop by the Fethiye Archaeological Museum, where finds from the region are displayed.

At the site, visitors see not a single separate monument, but a group of rock-cut burials located at different heights. The best preserved are the facades made in the form of temples: with columns, cornices, and deep entrances to the burial chambers. Even during a brief visit, it is easy to notice how the craftsmen used the natural surface of the rock to create strict symmetry.
The area is comparatively compact, so people often come here for a short walk from the center of Fethiye. The main activities on site are viewing the facades up close, reading the information boards if they are available, and taking in the city from the platforms at the foot and along the ascent. There is little shade on the slope during hot hours, so it is better to bring water and a hat in advance.
Nearby are the old center of Fethiye, the waterfront, the marina, and the Fethiye Archaeological Museum, so a visit to the tombs is easy to combine with a walk around the city. People usually reach the entrance on foot or by taxi from central Fethiye, after which a short but fairly steep climb up the steps remains.
