Lyabi-Hauz Square

Lyabi-Hauz Square in Bukhara, Uzbekistan

Lyabi-Hauz Square is located in the historic center of Bukhara, within the old city, where dense development with madrasahs, shopping streets, and public spaces has been preserved. The ensemble was formed around a large hauz - an artificial pond that in the past was an important part of urban life. The name itself translates as "by the pond" and accurately reflects the layout of this place.

The main appearance of Lyabi-Hauz took shape in the 16th-17th centuries. Around the reservoir are the Kukeldash Madrasah, the Nadir Divan-Begi Khanqah, and the Nadir Divan-Begi Madrasah. Together they form one of the most cohesive architectural ensembles in Bukhara, where it is easy to see how religious, educational, and public functions were combined in the old city.

For tourists, Lyabi-Hauz is interesting not only for its individual monuments, but also for the organization of the space itself. Here you can imagine what the everyday environment of Bukhara looked like before modern redevelopment: residents gathered by the water, trade routes passed nearby, and the shade of trees and the open square made this place convenient for meetings and rest. Unlike many other urban reservoirs, this hauz has survived to the present day.

Today the ensemble is part of the historic center of Bukhara, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Visitors come here to see a characteristic urban square of old Bukhara, observe the facades with decorative ceramics and brickwork, and walk through one of the most recognizable public spaces in the city.

It is convenient to explore the buildings here at a leisurely pace from different points, because the reservoir offers a wide view of the facades. The Kukeldash Madrasah stands out for its large scale and строгий composition, while the buildings of Nadir Divan-Begi are notable for their decorative design and for the way they are integrated into the overall space of the square. It is best to come here in the morning or toward evening, when the light is softer and the details of the decoration are more clearly visible.

During a walk, you can go around the hauz along its perimeter, sit by the water, and see how the square is arranged on the scale of the old city. This is one of the few places in Bukhara where the historic urban environment is perceived not in fragments, but as a unified space. It is convenient for taking photographs, observing everyday life in the center of Bukhara, and combining architectural sightseeing with a short rest between walks through the old city.

Nearby are the Toki Sarrafon trading dome, the Magoki-Attori Mosque, and other monuments of the historic center, so a visit to Lyabi-Hauz can easily be included in a walking route through Bukhara. People usually reach the square on foot from the central part of the old city or by taxi to the nearest streets, from where only a few minutes of walking remain.
