Registan Square in Samarkand
Registan Square in Samarkand, Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Registan Square is located in the historic part of Samarkand, not far from the city center, and is considered one of the most famous architectural ensembles in Uzbekistan. Its appearance is shaped by three madrasahs built at different stages of history: the Ulugh Beg Madrasah, the Sher-Dor Madrasah, and the Tillya-Kari Madrasah. Together they create a unified space that today best conveys the ceremonial appearance of old Samarkand.
The name "Registan" is traditionally associated with a city square where important public events took place in the past. In the 15th century, under Ulugh Beg, this place became not only a political but also an educational center. The Ulugh Beg Madrasah, built earlier than the others, was one of the notable educational institutions of its time, and the later 17th-century buildings completed the ensemble and gave the square its current recognizable appearance.
For visitors, Registan is primarily interesting for its architecture: high portals, mosaics, majolica, geometric ornamentation, and the thoughtful symmetry of the facades. The inner courtyards and rooms of the madrasahs help to imagine how the religious and educational complexes of Central Asia were arranged. It is a convenient place to get acquainted with the history of Samarkand through its urban environment, and not only through individual monuments.
The Registan ensemble is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site "Samarkand - Crossroads of Cultures," added to the list in 2001. Other historic sites are located nearby, including the domed Chorsu building and the Shaybanid Mausoleum, so a visit to the square often becomes part of a broader route through old Samarkand.

Here, madrasahs from different eras stand side by side, and the history of the city can be read.
Three madrasahs, mosaics, and the ceremonial square of old Samarkand
The main thing visitors see at the Registan is three monumental facades facing the square. The Ulugh Beg Madrasah is distinguished by its earlier Timurid architecture and strict composition, the Sher-Dor Madrasah is known for the images on its portal, rare in the Islamic architecture of the region, and the Tillya-Kari Madrasah combined the functions of a madrasah and a congregational mosque. Inside, you can see iwans, courtyards, former cells, and decorative finishes, where the differences between the buildings of the 15th and 17th centuries are clearly visible.
Registan is usually visited on foot, taking time to look at the facades from the square and then entering the inner spaces. Details are especially noticeable here: assembled ceramics, calligraphic inserts, domes, and the design of the entrance arches. In the evening, the ensemble is often perceived differently thanks to the lighting, while during the day the ornaments and the color palette of the facing are more clearly visible.
The square is convenient for independent exploration and for learning about the city's history accompanied by a guide. Nearby are the Shaybanid Mausoleum, the covered Chorsu market, the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, and the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, so the walk can be continued to other monuments of historic Samarkand.
The easiest way to get here is from the center of Samarkand by taxi or public transport to the Registan area, after which only a few minutes' walk remain. It is worth allowing enough time for the visit to see not only the square, but also the inner parts of each madrasah.
