Tilla-Kori Madrasah
Tilla-Kori Madrasah in Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Tilla-Kori Madrasah is located in the center of Samarkand, on the northern side of Registan Square. It is one of the three main buildings of the famous ensemble that formed the ceremonial core of the historic city. For tourists, Tilla-Kori is interesting because here you can see not only an educational building, but also a mosque with particularly rich interior decoration.
The madrasah was built in the 17th century, between 1646 and 1660, by order of the Samarkand ruler Yalangtush Bahadur. Its name is usually translated as "covered with gold" or "gilded." This name is connected with the decoration of the mosque, where gilding and traditional painting were used in the decor.
In terms of layout, it is a large rectangular complex with a main portal, an inner courtyard, hujras for students, and corner towers. The courtyard preserves the four-iwan composition traditional for Central Asian architecture, while on the western side there is a mosque with a large domed hall. The facades are decorated with majolica, mosaic, brick ornamentation, and patterns characteristic of 17th-century Samarkand architecture.
Today, Tilla-Kori is part of the Registan ensemble, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the historic center of Samarkand. A visit to this monument is usually combined with a tour of the two neighboring madrasahs - Ulugh Beg and Sher-Dor - in order to better understand the layout of one of the most famous squares in Uzbekistan.

Tilla-Kori Madrasah and its interiors at the Registan
Here, a study courtyard, a mosque, and 17th-century decorative ornamentation come together.
The gilded mosque interior and the madrasah courtyard at the Registan
The main thing that attracts attention inside Tilla-Kori is the domed hall of the mosque with its rich decoration in the kundal technique. Here you can observe intricate floral and geometric patterns, painting with the use of gold, and decorative elements that create a completely different image compared to the more restrained courtyard and outer facades. The contrast between the building's exterior restraint and the насыщенный interior of the prayer space is especially striking.
In the inner courtyard, visitors will see arcades, former hujra cells, and iwans that form a clear symmetrical composition. During your visit, it is worth paying attention to the combination of brick masonry, majolica, and mosaic, as well as to the proportions of the main portal, which sets the scale for the entire structure. This is a convenient place to observe the features of 17th-century Samarkand architecture without haste and from different angles.
The madrasah is easy to visit together with the other monuments of the Registan: opposite are the Ulugh Beg and Sher-Dor madrasahs, and nearby are the Bibi-Khanym Mosque, Siab Bazaar, and the Gur-e-Amir Mausoleum. People usually come here for a leisurely exploration of the ensemble, photographs of the square, and an introduction to the decorative art of the late Timurid era and the period that followed.
The easiest way to get here is on foot or by taxi from the center of Samarkand, since Registan Square is located in one of the most famous and accessible parts of the city. Before visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that the main impression is connected not only with the facade, but also with the interior of the mosque, so it is best to allow time to see the inner rooms.
