Sher-Dor Madrasah

Sher-Dor Madrasah in Samarkand, Uzbekistan

Sher-Dor Madrasah is located in the center of Samarkand, on Registan Square, opposite the Ulugh Beg Madrasah. It is one of the most recognizable buildings in the city's historic ensemble, built in the 17th century by order of Yalangtush Bahadur as a Muslim educational institution. Together with the neighboring madrasahs, it forms the ceremonial appearance of the Registan.

The main feature of Sher-Dor is the decoration of its portal with images of predators resembling lions or tigers chasing deer, and sun disks with human features. Such a subject is unusual for Islamic architecture in Central Asia, which is why the madrasah stands out especially against the backdrop of other monuments in Samarkand. The name "Sher-Dor" is usually translated as "having lions" or "decorated with lions."

The building attracts attention with its elaborate decorative design. On the facades and in the inner courtyard, visitors can see mosaics, majolica, ornamental brickwork, floral motifs, geometric patterns, and calligraphic inscriptions. For visitors, this is an opportunity to observe characteristic techniques of late medieval Samarkand architecture and compare them with the decoration of the neighboring buildings of the Registan.

The madrasah has been restored several times, especially in the 20th century, when major restoration work was carried out. Today it is part of the Registan ensemble, which is included in the UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the historic center of Samarkand. This place is of interest to those who want to see one of the city's key architectural monuments and better understand the history of the Samarkand school of architecture.

During your visit, it is worth paying attention not only to the main facade, but also to the composition of the entire building. The madrasah was built around an inner courtyard with hujras, small rooms where students lived and studied. Towers rise at the corners, and the portal is designed so that its decorative pattern can be clearly seen from the square.

Up close, the difference between the large panels and the finer decoration of the arches, niches, and walls is especially noticeable. Visitors usually examine the majolica inserts, the complex geometry of the ornaments and inscriptions, and also photograph the portal, where the madrasah's most famous scene is located. It is best to plan your visit without rushing, since the details of the decoration are revealed precisely at close range.

Nearby are the Ulugh Beg Madrasah and the Tillya-Kari Madrasah, together with which Sher-Dor forms the complete ensemble of the Registan. Other monuments of old Samarkand are also within walking distance, so a visit to this place can conveniently be combined with a walk through the city's historic center.

The easiest way to get here is by taxi or public transport to Registan Square, after which you need to walk a few minutes to the madrasah. Before your visit, it is useful to check the opening hours of the ensemble, as access to the interior spaces and the grounds may depend on the complex's operating schedule.
