Sultanhani Caravanserai

Sultanhani Caravanserai in Konya, Turkey

The Sultanhani Caravanserai is located in the town of Sultanhani on the road between Konya and Aksaray, about 100 km east of central Konya. It is one of the largest and best-preserved Seljuk caravanserais in Turkey - roadside complexes where merchant caravans, travelers, and their animals stopped in the Middle Ages.

The structure was built in the 13th century during the height of the Sultanate of Rum, when important trade routes crossed central Anatolia. After being damaged, the caravanserai was restored and expanded, which gave it its present scale. Today, Sultanhani is regarded as one of the key examples of Seljuk roadside architecture in Anatolia.

The main feature of the complex is its clear and easily readable layout. Through a monumental portal with fine stone carving, visitors enter a courtyard that was used in the warm season. Beyond it is a covered hall for winter use, and in the center of the courtyard stands a small raised mosque. Around the perimeter were rooms for travelers, storage areas, stables, and service spaces.

Sultanhani is of interest to those who want to see not separate ruins but a large medieval complex where it is easy to understand how a trading stop on a long overland route was organized. People come here for the architectural details, the massive stone volumes, and a general idea of how the caravan infrastructure of 13th-century Anatolia functioned.

Sultanhani Caravanserai - Layout and Architectural Features

The structure demonstrates the thoughtful layout and functions of medieval roadside infrastructure.

During a visit, the main portal usually attracts the most attention - a tall, deeply profiled entrance with characteristic Seljuk stone carving. In the inner courtyard, the main elements of the complex are clearly visible: an open area for the warm season, a central kiosk mosque on supports, and long rows of rooms along the walls. In the covered section, you can see massive vaults and imagine how people, goods, and animals were accommodated here during the cold season.

The site is convenient for a спокойный inspection of the architecture without a large number of exhibition materials: the main thing here is the structure of the building itself. It is worth noting the contrast between the decoratively designed entrance and the stricter interior volumes, as well as the functionality of the layout, where everything was subordinated to the needs of the road, safety, and cargo storage.

The caravanserai is often visited on the way between Konya, Aksaray, and Cappadocia, so it is easy to include in a driving route through central Anatolia. From here, it is relatively easy to continue toward the Ihlara Valley, the underground cities of the Nevsehir area, or the historical monuments of Konya.

The easiest way to get here is by car or intercity bus along the Konya - Aksaray highway, with a stop in the town of Sultanhani. A short stop is usually enough for a visit, but those interested in medieval architecture may want to allow more time to examine the details of the stonework and interior spaces.
