Ulus District
Ulus District in Ankara, Turkey - the historic city center
Ulus is the historical center of Ankara, located in the old part of the city. It is here that one can most clearly see how the capital of Turkey was shaped over different eras: Roman monuments, Ottoman religious and commercial buildings, structures from the first decades of the Turkish Republic, and traditional residential development stand side by side in one district.
The main feature of Ulus is the high concentration of historical sites within a small area. This part of Ankara is home to Ankara Castle, Haci Bayram Mosque, the Temple of Augustus, the Roman Baths, the Column of Julian, old shopping streets, and several important museum and public buildings. The district is interesting because it allows visitors to see different cultural layers of the city during a single walk.
Ulus has largely preserved the appearance of old Ankara: here you will find narrow streets, restored Ottoman houses, small workshops, markets, and squares. The district is noticeably different from the more modern quarters of the capital and is well suited to those who want to better understand the city's history beyond the government and business areas.
For tourists, Ulus is convenient because many attractions are within walking distance of one another. People come here to stroll through historic streets, visit museums, and see architectural monuments connected with the ancient, Seljuk, Ottoman, and republican periods of Ankara's history.

Ulus District - walks through historic streets and museums
Here you can see the layers of the city's history during a single walk.
The castle, ancient monuments, and old shopping streets
A walk through Ulus usually begins in the area of Ankara Castle. On the slopes around the castle walls, old houses have been converted into small cafés, workshops, and handicraft shops. From here, there are views over the central quarters of Ankara, and the castle itself helps visitors imagine what the city looked like before its modern expansion.
Below the castle is the Haci Bayram Mosque complex and, next to it, the Temple of Augustus - a rare example in Ankara of monuments from different eras standing side by side in one space. In the district, you can also see the Roman Baths of Ankara and the Column of Julian. These sites are especially interesting for those who want to trace the city's ancient past not through museum exhibitions, but within the urban environment itself.
Ulus is also suitable for a calm city walk. It is worth strolling along the old shopping streets, looking into historic hans, including Cengelhan, and paying attention to the buildings of the early republican period. Nearby are the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations and the building of the First Grand National Assembly of Turkey, which can conveniently be included in the same route.
Ulus is easy to reach by metro and city buses, as the district is connected to the rest of Ankara through the station of the same name and major transport streets. When walking, it is worth keeping in mind the inclines and uneven sections near the castle, so comfortable shoes are truly useful here.
