Agora of Izmir
Agora of Izmir, Izmir, Turkey - the ancient center of Smyrna
The Agora of Izmir is located in the Namazgah district, not far from the center of Izmir. It is one of the city's main archaeological monuments, associated with ancient Smyrna - the ancient predecessor of modern Izmir. Here you can see how the public and commercial center of a large Roman-era Mediterranean city was organized.
The first structures on this site date back to the Hellenistic period, and a significant part of the surviving ruins was restored after a major earthquake in the 2nd century AD. Archaeologists have uncovered the rectangular layout of the complex with an open courtyard, colonnades, arches, vaulted rooms, and underground sections. Even in its current state, the monument makes it possible to imagine the scale of the urban development and the layout of ancient public space.
In ancient times, the agora was not only a marketplace, but also a place where the everyday life of the city took place. People traded here, discussed public matters, and met with one another. For this reason, the monument is interesting not only to lovers of ancient architecture, but also to those who want to better understand the history of Izmir and see how ancient ruins are preserved within a modern city.
Excavations on the site have been carried out in stages since the 20th century. During the research, inscriptions, architectural fragments, and decorative elements were found, helping scholars study the development of Smyrna in different periods. Today, the agora is open to visitors as an open-air archaeological area, where the contrast between the ancient structures and the surrounding urban environment is especially striking.

Agora of Izmir: the archaeological complex of ancient Smyrna
Traces of trade, public life, and Roman urban development have been preserved here.
Roman arches, galleries, and underground vaults of ancient Smyrna
On the territory of the agora, visitors walk among the remains of colonnades, walls, and arched structures, and can also examine the vaulted rooms of the lower level. The underground parts of the complex are especially expressive, where the engineering logic of the Roman construction is most clearly visible. From different points, the multilayered nature of the monument, formed after rebuilding and restoration, can be clearly seen.
During your visit, it is worth paying attention to the stone details, fragments of inscriptions, and preserved support elements, which show how thoughtfully this public center was designed. The space of the agora gives an impression not of a single building, but of an entire complex where commercial, administrative, and public functions were combined. A calm, unhurried walk is usually enough for a visit, especially if you are interested in archaeology and the history of the city.
Nearby are Kadifekale, the historic Kemeralti district, and several other places connected with Izmir's past, so a visit to the agora is easy to include in a walk through the old part of the city. You can get here by taxi, city bus, or on foot from the central districts of Izmir if you are already in the city center.
