Ancient City of Pinara

Ancient City of Pinara

Ancient City of Pinara in Fethiye, Turkey

The ancient city of Pinara is located near Fethiye, deep in the mountainous part of former Lycia in southwestern Turkey. The ruins lie approximately 45-50 kilometers from the town and occupy the slope and foot of a massive hill, which served as a natural defense and dominated the entire area.

Pinara was one of the major cities of the Lycian region. Today, it is an open-air archaeological site where rock-cut tombs, a theater, remnants of temples, public buildings, and sections of fortification walls have been preserved. Some of the structures date to the Hellenistic and Roman periods, which is clearly visible in the city layout and the character of the stone masonry.

The name Pinara is usually associated with a Lycian word meaning “round.” This explanation is linked to the shape of the hill or the outline of the acropolis above the city. The site is interesting because here you can see not just a single monument, but an entire ancient urban landscape integrated into the rocky nature of Lycia.

Pinara is suitable for those interested in history, archaeology, and ancient ruins away from busy resort areas. A trip here makes it possible to better imagine the structure of an ancient Lycian city while also seeing one of the characteristic historical landscapes of the Fethiye area.

At Pinara, visitors usually explore the rock-cut tombs carved into the steep sections of the hill, as well as the ruins of the ancient theater, which offers views of the surrounding valley. The foundations and fragments of various public and religious buildings have been preserved here, so a walk through the site gives an impression of the structure of the ancient city, not just its individual monuments.

The route through the ruins passes over uneven rocky terrain, with some ascents, so it is more convenient to choose closed shoes and a time without intense heat for visiting. On site, it is important to watch your step carefully and keep in mind that some of the preserved structures are located on slopes and among rocky outcrops.

Pinara is especially interesting because many elements of the city have been preserved in their natural surroundings, without dense modern development nearby. Other monuments of ancient Lycia are located in the same part of the region, including Tlos and the sanctuary of Letoon, which are often included in the same trip around the Fethiye area.

People usually come here by car or as part of an excursion from Fethiye, since the ruins are located away from the main coastal routes. It is best to plan the trip in advance, taking into account the road through the inland part of the area and the weather conditions during the warm season.
