Tlos Citadel
Tlos Citadel in Kalkan, Turkey
The Tlos Citadel is located in the archaeological zone of the ancient city of Tlos in the Seydikemer district, east of Fethiye and near the Xanthos River valley. For tourists, it is one of the most illustrative monuments of Lycia, where traces of several eras have been preserved on a single hill. From the upper part of the complex, there is a wide view of the surrounding valley, so visitors come here not only for the ancient ruins, but also for a general impression of the landscape of ancient Lycia.
Tlos was an important city of the Lycian League and existed for a very long time - from ancient periods to the Ottoman era. Thanks to this, on the territory of the complex you can see Lycian rock tombs, remains of ancient public buildings, and later fortifications at the top of the acropolis. It is precisely this multilayered character that makes the citadel especially interesting: here it is clearly visible how the same strategic location was used in different centuries.
The citadel occupies an elevation above the main ruins of the city and is perceived as its dominant part. Below are the theater, baths, stadium, and other archaeological remains, while above are the walls and later buildings associated with the fortress. A visit helps to understand the layout of the ancient settlement and its defensive significance.
The site will be of interest to those who want to see not a single monument, but a large historical complex with different layers of history. When visiting, it is worth considering that the site is located on a slope, so comfortable footwear is especially important here. A trip to Tlos is often combined with visits to other attractions in the Xanthos Valley.

When exploring the citadel, attention is usually drawn to the combination of natural rock, Lycian tombs, and the remains of later fortification structures. The upper platform makes it possible to see the structure of the entire archaeological site: how the public buildings, passageways, and terraces were arranged, and why this hill had defensive importance. The climb here gives a better understanding of the scale of the ancient city than viewing individual ruins from below.
On the territory of Tlos, visitors usually pass by the rock-cut facades of the tombs, the Roman theater, baths, and the remains of the stadium, after which they climb to the upper part of the complex. The citadel is interesting not only as a viewpoint, but also as a place where traces of reconstructions from different periods are visible. This helps to show that the monument does not belong to a single era, but was formed gradually.
It is better to allow enough time for the walk, as the site is large and uneven in places. In summer, the open slope can be hot, so it is useful to bring water and sun protection. Near Tlos, visitors often also go to ancient Xanthos, the sanctuary of Letoon, and Saklikent Canyon.
The most convenient way to get here is by car or as part of an excursion from Fethiye and the surrounding areas of Kalkan via Seydikemer. The citadel is part of the overall archaeological complex of Tlos, so it is usually explored together with the rest of the city's ruins.
