Ayasuluk Fortress stands on the summit of the hill of the same name in the town of Selcuk, not far from the Aegean coast and ancient Ephesus. It is one of the city’s main historic landmarks: from the top of the hill, the surroundings are clearly visible, so the fortification long held defensive importance and controlled the routes to the valley and the ancient center of the region.
The core of the fortress consists of Byzantine fortifications, which were later rebuilt during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. This layered appearance is still visible today: the masonry includes ancient stone blocks and architectural fragments reused in the construction of the walls and gates. In Asia Minor, this is a characteristic feature of medieval fortresses.
