Ayasuluk Fortress

Ayasuluk Fortress in Izmir, Turkey

Ayasuluk Fortress stands on the summit of the hill of the same name in the town of Selcuk, not far from the Aegean coast and ancient Ephesus. It is one of the city’s main historic landmarks: from the top of the hill, the surroundings are clearly visible, so the fortification long held defensive importance and controlled the routes to the valley and the ancient center of the region.

The core of the fortress consists of Byzantine fortifications, which were later rebuilt during the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. This layered appearance is still visible today: the masonry includes ancient stone blocks and architectural fragments reused in the construction of the walls and gates. In Asia Minor, this is a characteristic feature of medieval fortresses.

The fortress walls encircle the upper part of the hill, and towers are arranged along the perimeter, making it easy to imagine the scale of the defensive system. A visit to Ayasuluk is usually of interest to those who want to see not only ancient Ephesus but also the later history of the region. From here, there are views of Selcuk, the plain, and nearby monuments connected with the city’s centuries-old history.

Medieval Walls Above the Ephesian Valley

Within the fortress grounds, you can walk along sections of the walls, examine the towers, and notice the differences in construction techniques in various parts of the fortifications. The best-preserved fragments help explain how the defense of the hill was organized and why this place was chosen to monitor the roads and approaches to Ephesus.

The climb up the hill is interesting not only for the fortress itself but also for the panorama. From the highest point, you can see the town of Selcuk, the surrounding plain, and neighboring historic sites. It is a convenient place to combine the ancient heritage of Ephesus with later Byzantine and Islamic monuments in a single itinerary.

Nearby are the Basilica of St. John, the Isa Bey Mosque, and the Ephesus Archaeological Museum in Selcuk. The fortress is usually reached from the center of Selcuk on foot or by a short taxi ride, as the hill is located within the town limits.
