Genoese Castle is located in the center of Cesme, a resort town on the Aegean coast in Izmir Province. Despite its common name, the castle’s present appearance is mainly associated with the Ottoman reconstruction of the early 16th century, carried out on the site of earlier fortifications. It occupies a prominent place in the historic part of the town and is clearly visible from the waterfront and harbor.
The castle was built as a defensive structure to protect the coast and the entrance to the port. The massive walls, towers, and inner courtyard make it possible to imagine what the coastal fortifications of this region looked like during the Ottoman period. Thanks to its advantageous location, the castle retained military importance for a long time and was used by a garrison.
Today, the castle is of interest not only as a historical monument but also as a museum space. The Cesme Archaeological Museum operates on its grounds, displaying finds from ancient Erythrai and the surrounding area. A visit to the castle is usually combined with a walk through the old center of Cesme, the port, and the waterfront.

Inside the castle, visitors can explore the courtyard, walk along the stone walls, and climb to sections that offer views of Cesme Port, the marina, and the urban landscape. The outer walls and towers are the best preserved, making the defensive character of the structure easy to understand. The interior space is relatively compact, so a visit usually does not take too much time.
The Cesme Archaeological Museum is located directly within the castle grounds. Its exhibition is devoted primarily to the ancient city of Erythrai, one of the ancient centers of Ionia, and includes pottery, sculptural fragments, and other finds discovered in this area. This format makes the visit more meaningful: here you can see not only the fortification itself, but also materials on the history of the entire Cesme Peninsula.
At times, the castle’s inner spaces are used for temporary cultural events and concerts, especially during the warm season. Nearby are the Cesme waterfront, the port, the city market, and quarters with cafés, so the visit can easily be combined with a walk through the town center. The castle is easy to reach on foot from central Cesme and from the seaside area.
