Kadifekale Castle is located on Mount Pagos above the central part of Izmir. Its name is usually translated as "velvet castle." The fortress is connected with the history of ancient Smyrna: the development of the city on the slopes of the hill began in the Hellenistic era, and the summit itself retained defensive importance for a long time.
Sections of the fortress walls, towers, and fragments of fortifications have survived to this day, rebuilt in different periods - from antiquity to the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. Therefore, Kadifekale is interesting not as a completely preserved castle, but as a historical fortification bearing traces of several eras.
For tourists, this place is important above all as a viewpoint. From the fortress grounds, there are views of Izmir's urban neighborhoods, the port area, and the waters of Izmir Bay. People come here to see the city from above and better imagine how old Smyrna was laid out.
Kadifekale is located in an urban setting, away from the waterfront but not far from the center of Izmir. A visit is usually combined with a walk through the city's historic districts, Kemeralti Market, the Agora of Smyrna, and the neighborhoods at the foot of the hill.

The castle grounds are relatively compact, so a visit usually does not take much time.
Kadifekale is perceived more as a viewing and archaeological site than as a museum object with an extensive exhibition. Here, it is important to pay attention not only to the individual preserved elements, but also to the fortress's very position above the city - it helps explain why this hill had strategic importance for many centuries.
After the visit, you can descend toward Izmir's historic center to see the Agora of Smyrna, Kemeralti Market, and the Konak district with its square and Clock Tower. You can usually get here by taxi or public transport, with the last part of the route uphill on foot.
