Candarli Castle
Candarli Castle in Izmir on the shores of the Aegean Sea
Candarli Castle is located in the coastal part of the town of Candarli, south of Dikili, on the shores of the Aegean Sea. It is a compact medieval fortress that is clearly visible from the seafront and remains one of the town’s most recognizable historical landmarks.
The structure’s modern appearance is largely associated with the Genoese period, although fortifications existed on this site earlier as well. The castle was built with its seaside location in mind: massive walls and towers form a closed defensive perimeter right by the water. Because of this, it is perceived not only as a historical site, but also as an important part of Candarli’s coastal landscape.
Tourists are usually drawn here by the well-preserved outer walls, the striking silhouette of the fortress, and the opportunity to combine a visit with a walk through the old part of the town. This is not a large museum complex, but rather a monument that is easy to include in a short route around Candarli.
A visit to the castle is especially interesting for those who like small historical places that do not require a long tour. It is often viewed from the outside, photographed from the shore and against the backdrop of the sea, and then followed by a walk along the promenade, the town’s streets, and the nearby harbor.

Candarli Castle and a walk through the town’s coastal area
Here, the castle is best understood together with the coastline and the old town.
Medieval walls right at the edge of the Aegean Sea
The main thing visitors see is the powerful stone walls and towers facing the water. The castle makes the strongest impression from the outside: this is where the outlines of the fortifications, their connection to the coastline, and the building’s characteristic position on a cape by the sea are best appreciated.
The format of a visit here is usually simple and brief. Tourists come for a walk along the shore, to view the outer perimeter, and to take photographs, especially in clear weather, when the castle stands out well against the bay. The interior spaces may be less accessible or not used as a full museum exhibition, so a trip here is more often planned as part of a walk around the town.
Nearby are the Candarli promenade, a small harbor, and the town’s historic buildings, so after seeing the castle it is convenient to continue along the coastal area. You can usually get here by car or local transport from Dikili, and then walk toward the sea and the central part of Candarli.
