Aydos Castle

Aydos Castle in Istanbul, Turkey

Aydos Castle is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, in the Pendik district, on Aydos Hill at the edge of the forest area of the same name. It is one of the highest points in the city, so the site has long had defensive and observation significance. Today, people come here not only for the fortress ruins but also for walks in the natural area.

The fortress is attributed to the Byzantine period. It was part of a system of fortifications that controlled the approaches to the city and important roads on the Asian side. Fragments of the walls and remains of the fortifications have survived to this day, allowing visitors to imagine the former size and layout of this small outpost.

The main feature of Aydos is the combination of an archaeological monument and a forest landscape. The hill offers wide views of the surroundings of Istanbul, and the area itself is suitable for a peaceful walk. A visit to the castle is usually combined with an outing into Aydos Forest, especially if you want to see a lesser-known historical site away from the central tourist routes.

This place is more likely to appeal to those who enjoy Byzantine history, panoramic viewpoints, and walks in nature than to those looking for a well-preserved castle with interiors. The ruins here are modest, but the hilltop location and the surrounding forest make Aydos a notable attraction in the eastern part of Istanbul.

On the site, you can see sections of stone walls and the remains of defensive structures located at the top of the hill. The castle is best experienced as a viewpoint and historical site: people come here to explore the ruins, walk along the paths around the hill, and see how the fortress was integrated into the terrain.

The climb to the castle passes through the forest area of Aydos, where there are walking routes and spots for relaxing in nature. Because of the changes in elevation, walking shoes are more practical here than regular city footwear, especially after rain. At the very top, you should mainly expect open views and the atmosphere of an ancient fortification rather than museum infrastructure.

Nearby are Aydos Forest and recreation areas within it, so a trip here is often combined with a longer walk through the natural park. The easiest way to get here is by transport to the Pendik district or nearby neighborhoods on the Asian side of Istanbul, and then continue by taxi or on foot to Aydos Hill.
