Yoros Genoese Castle
Yoros Genoese Castle in Istanbul, Turkey - ruins above Anadolu Kavagi
Yoros Genoese Castle is located on the Asian side of Istanbul, above the fishing village of Anadolu Kavagi, at the point where the Bosphorus opens into the Black Sea. The ruins stand on elevated ground, offering clear views of the strait, the coastal slopes, and passing ships. Thanks to this position, the site has long held defensive and observation importance.
Although the castle is often called Genoese, its history began earlier. Fortifications on this site existed as far back as the Byzantine period, and in later centuries they were used by various forces seeking to control the sea route between the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. The name is associated with the Genoese, who indeed played an important role in the life of this area during the Middle Ages.
Today, sections of stone walls, towers, and gates built into the hillside terrain have survived. This is not a restored museum complex, but rather true historical ruins, so people come here primarily for the panoramic views and the atmosphere of an old frontier fortress. A visit is usually combined with a walk around Anadolu Kavagi and a trip to the northern part of the Bosphorus.
Yoros is of interest to those who want to see a lesser-known side of Istanbul beyond the city center. It combines military history, views of a strategic stretch of the strait, and the calm coastal setting of a small village. The site is well suited for a short half-day outing, especially if you want to combine ruins, a seascape, and a walk away from dense urban development.

Ruins on a hill overlooking the Bosphorus and the Black Sea
Within the castle grounds, you can see fragments of the outer walls, the remains of towers, and stonework from different periods. The ruins are located on an uneven slope, so a walk here involves climbing and walking on dirt and rocky sections. It is best to wear comfortable shoes and keep in mind that part of the area retains the character of an archaeological site without modern infrastructure.
The main reason people climb up here is the wide panorama of the northern Bosphorus. From above, it is easy to see how the strait narrows before opening into the Black Sea, and the shores of both the European and Asian sides are also visible. In clear weather, this is one of the best places to understand the strategic importance of the castle and the location of Anadolu Kavagi itself.
After exploring the site, many visitors go down to the village waterfront, where there are fish restaurants, piers, and walking areas. Nearby there is also the Yusa hill and memorial area, which is also often visited as part of the same trip. You can get here from Istanbul by ferry to Anadolu Kavagi, and then go up to the castle on foot or by local transport, if available.
