Urgup
Urgup, Nevsehir, Turkey - the old town of Cappadocia and Temenni Hill
Urgup is located in the central part of Cappadocia, in Nevsehir Province, approximately between Nevsehir, Goreme, and Avanos. It is one of the old towns of the region, known for its stone buildings and spaces carved into soft volcanic tuff. The historic quarters rise along the slopes, so the town's skyline is made up of houses, terraces, rock outcrops, and old utility buildings.
The town developed through the ancient, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods, which is evident in the character of its buildings and the use of local stone. In the old part of Urgup, stone mansions, arched passages, inner courtyards, basements, and wine cellars have been preserved. An important point in the center is Temenni Hill, or Temenni Tepesi, which offers views of the town and the surrounding slopes.
For tourists, Urgup is interesting as a place where you can see the everyday architecture of Cappadocia outside a museum setting. Here it is easy to notice how traditional houses, cave rooms, and later urban development coexist in one space. The town is also known for its connection with local winemaking: there are vineyards in the surrounding area, and cellars and tasting rooms operate in Urgup itself.
Urgup is convenient to use as a base for trips around the region. Nearby are the Gomeda and Uzengi valleys, suitable for walks, and on the road toward Nevsehir are the Three Beauties rock formations, one of the recognizable natural symbols of Cappadocia. From the town, it is easy to reach Goreme, Avanos, Uchisar, and other points on a central Cappadocia route.

Urgup - walks through historic quarters and wine cellars
Walking routes are combined with urban architecture and local wine cellars.
Stone mansions, tuff houses, and views from Temenni Hill
In Urgup, it is worth walking through the old quarters on foot: it is on the narrow streets that the light stone facades, carved entrances, arches, stairways, and passages between houses are best seen. Some buildings have preserved traditional inner courtyards and utility spaces, partly carved into the rock. This type of development helps explain how local residents adapted the terrain and tuff rock for everyday life.
Temenni Hill in the center of town serves as one of the main viewpoints. From above, you can see the old and new quarters, slopes with stone houses, and the distinctive landscape of Cappadocia. Historic mausoleums are located on the hill, and the site itself is suitable for a short stop during a walk through the center.
In the lower part of town, there is a concentration of cafes, small shops, hotels, and wine cellars open to visitors. Urgup is often chosen by travelers who want to combine exploring the urban setting with trips around the surrounding area and walks in the valleys. Nearby, you can visit the Three Beauties, as well as the Gomeda and Uzengi valleys, where hiking trails run along streambeds and rocky sections.
Urgup is usually reached by road from Nevsehir, Goreme, or Kayseri by bus, transfer, or car. The nearest airports are in Nevsehir and Kayseri, from where travelers continue through the central part of Cappadocia.
