Uchisar is a small settlement in Cappadocia, not far from Goreme, on the western edge of Pigeon Valley. It stands on elevated ground and is visible from afar thanks to the large tuff rock in which the famous Uchisar Castle is built. It is one of the highest and most convenient viewpoints in this part of the region.
The main feature of Uchisar is the rock castle, with rooms, passages, and niches carved inside it. For centuries, fortified rocks like this were used by the inhabitants of Cappadocia as shelters and observation points. Today, the castle is primarily known for its panoramic views: from the upper levels, there are excellent views of the valleys, the surroundings of Goreme, and, in clear weather, the summit of Erciyes.
The village itself retains the characteristic appearance of Cappadocia: stone houses, old cave dwellings, and narrow streets running along the slope are combined here. Part of the historic buildings has been adapted into small hotels, cafés, and craft workshops, but overall Uchisar remains a მშვიდ peaceful residential village rather than just a tourist spot.
Uchisar is convenient as a starting point for walks in the surrounding area. From here, it is easy to reach Pigeon Valley and other well-known landscapes of Cappadocia, while Goreme National Park is very close by. Thanks to the combination of a panoramic viewpoint, traditional architecture, and proximity to natural routes, the village is often included in trips around the region.

A Panoramic Castle Above Pigeon Valley
The main reason to visit Uchisar is the climb to the rock castle that dominates the village. Inside and at the base of the rock, you can see rooms, windows, entrances, and storage niches carved into the tuff, characteristic of Cappadocia's historic architecture. Viewing points are arranged on the upper levels, from which the relief of the valleys can be seen especially well.
In the village itself, it is worth walking along the streets around the castle: here, facades carved into the soft rock, stone houses made of local tuff, and terraces overlooking the surroundings have been preserved. Uchisar has small cafés, workshops, and shops with local products, and some of the old cave spaces can be seen from the outside directly during a walk through the residential quarters.
From Uchisar, it is convenient to set out on foot into Pigeon Valley, where the route passes among rock formations, dovecotes, and viewpoints. Nearby are Goreme, the Goreme Open-Air Museum, Love Valley, and other famous places of central Cappadocia.
The easiest way to get here is from Goreme by taxi, car, or local transport; the distance is short, so many also come on foot. For visiting the castle and walking through the streets, it is best to choose comfortable shoes, as the village has many uphill sections, stony areas, and uneven steps.
