Ata-Darvaza Gate
Ata-Darvaza Gate in Khiva, Uzbekistan
Ata-Darvaza Gate is located in the western part of Itchan Kala, the historic inner city of Khiva and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is one of the entrances to the old fortified area, through which visitors can still imagine how access to the fortified city was organized.
Historically, the western entrance was connected to a busy part of Khiva. Nearby were trading rows, public buildings, and important landmarks, including the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah and the Kunya-Ark Fortress. This proximity shows that this section of Itchan Kala had not only defensive significance, but also commercial and administrative importance.
The current gate is a reconstruction: the original structure was lost in the 20th century and later restored during efforts to preserve the historic appearance of Khiva. In form, it is a traditional city gate with an arched passageway and inner rooms, built based on local construction methods and decorative motifs of Khorezm architecture.
For tourists, Ata-Darvaza is primarily interesting as part of the overall structure of Itchan Kala. It is a convenient place to begin a walk through the old city, paying attention not only to individual monuments, but also to how the streets, fortress walls, markets, and palace buildings were connected to one another.

Here, the connection between the fortress gate, streets, and monuments of old Khiva is clearly visible.
The western entrance to Itchan Kala near Kunya-Ark
Ata-Darvaza is perceived not as a separate monument with richly decorated interiors, but as an important element of urban planning. Here you can examine the arched passageway, the thickness of the walls, the entrance section, and the overall layout of the entrance to the fortified city. This helps to better understand how Itchan Kala combined the functions of a fortress, residential quarter, and trade center.
While walking through the gate, it is worth paying attention to the adjacent sections of the wall and to the direction of the streets inside Itchan Kala. It is at points like this that it becomes especially clear that the old city was built as an enclosed space with a clearly defined system of entrances. The gate is well suited for unhurried sightseeing and photography, especially if you want to capture the transition from the outer part of Khiva to the city's historic core.
Very nearby are the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah, the Kalta Minor Minaret, and the Kunya-Ark Fortress, so a visit to Ata-Darvaza can easily be combined with seeing several key monuments of Itchan Kala in one walk.
The easiest way to get here is on foot through the historic center of Khiva, since the gate is located within Itchan Kala and is part of the usual routes through the old city.
