Islam Khoja Madrasah
Islam Khoja Madrasah in Khiva, Uzbekistan
The Islam Khoja Madrasah is located in Khiva, within Ichan Kala, the historic inner city where the main monuments of the khanate capital are concentrated. It was built in 1908-1910 at the initiative of the vizier Islam Khoja, one of the notable figures of the Khiva Khanate in the early 20th century. It is one of the late monuments of Khivan architecture, in which traditional forms are combined with features of its time.
The madrasah building forms a single ensemble with the Islam Khoja Minaret, one of the most recognizable landmarks of Khiva. The complex is relatively small and asymmetrical in plan, which distinguishes it from the earlier and more strictly symmetrical madrasahs of the region. The main entrance is located next to the base of the minaret, and the interior space is organized around a compact courtyard.
Inside there were study and living quarters for students, a domed hall, and a mosque. The appearance of the madrasah clearly reflects the traditions of Central Asian architecture, although the monument itself belongs to the late stage of architectural development in Khiva. Visitors find this place interesting as part of a coherent urban ensemble, where it is possible to see how the architectural school of the khanate changed at the beginning of the 20th century.
The madrasah is convenient to visit during a walk through Ichan Kala, near other monuments of old Khiva. It is especially appealing to those who want not only to see the famous minaret, but also to better understand the structure of religious and educational complexes in Central Asia and the characteristics of Khiva's urban environment.

When visiting the madrasah, it is worth paying attention to its compact layout and its connection with the minaret, which is perceived as a continuation of the entire ensemble. In the courtyard and on the facades, the materials and decorative techniques characteristic of Khiva are clearly visible - brick masonry, majolica decoration, and a restrained composition of rooms around the inner space.
The Islam Khoja Minaret is usually viewed together with the madrasah: it offers one of the most famous views of Ichan Kala and old Khiva. The madrasah itself reveals the more intimate side of the complex - student cells, domed rooms, and a small mosque integrated into the building's overall plan.
Nearby are the Juma Mosque, the Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasah, the walls of Ichan Kala, and other monuments of Khiva's historic center, so a visit can easily be combined with a walk through the old city. Visitors usually reach the madrasah on foot from the entrances to Ichan Kala, since the main sights within the historic center are located close to one another.
