Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa

Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa in Khiva, Uzbekistan

The Muhammad Amin Khan Madrasa is located in the historic center of Khiva, inside the fortress walls of Ichan Kala, opposite Kunya Ark. It is one of the largest madrasas in the city and a prominent architectural monument of the Khiva Khanate of the 19th century. It is often included in routes through old Khiva thanks to its convenient location and striking appearance.

The building was constructed in the middle of the 19th century and was intended for religious education. In its layout, it reflects the traditions of large Central Asian madrasas: hujras are arranged around the inner courtyard, while the main facade is emphasized by a tall portal and decorative finishing. For its time, the madrasa was considered very spacious and was used not only for education, but also for some public and administrative functions.

Visitors should pay attention to the scale of the building, the two-story composition, the majolica cladding, and the ornamental brickwork. The carved wooden doors, arched galleries, and the overall silhouette of the building, clearly visible in the panorama of Ichan Kala, are of particular interest. The madrasa helps illustrate what large educational complexes of Khiva looked like in the late period of its history.

Today, the building has been adapted into a hotel, although its historical appearance has generally been preserved, and it remains an important part of the architectural ensemble of Ichan Kala, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. For tourists, this is an opportunity to see the monument not only from the outside, but also from within, in the living urban environment of old Khiva.

The main facade of the madrasa is easy to recognize by its massive portal, corner towers, and rich decor in blue and turquoise tones. Inside, attention is usually drawn to the inner courtyard, rows of hujras, and loggias on the upper level. Even after the building was adapted for modern needs, the layout still clearly shows the structure of a traditional educational complex.

During your visit, it is worth examining the decorative details: majolica inserts, geometric patterns, brickwork, and wooden elements. The architecture is best appreciated through a calm inspection of the courtyard and facade from different viewpoints, especially if you compare the size of the madrasa with neighboring buildings in Ichan Kala. The interior rooms may be used by the hotel, so access to certain parts of the building may be limited.

Nearby are Kunya Ark, the Kalta Minor minaret, the Muhammad Rahim Khan Madrasa, and other monuments of the old city, so the madrasa is convenient to visit as part of a walking tour of Ichan Kala. The site is usually reached on foot from the main gates of old Khiva, as the main routes inside the fortress run along pedestrian streets.
