Said-bay Mosque-Madrasa
Said-bay Mosque-Madrasa in Khiva, Uzbekistan
The Said-bay Mosque-Madrasa is located in Khiva, near the Palvan-Darvaza Gate, on the eastern side of the historic city. The complex stands close to Itchan Kala, the main architectural core of old Khiva, and is among the monuments of the late period of urban development.
The ensemble was formed at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries and includes a mosque, a small madrasa, and a minaret. It is associated with the name of the wealthy Khivan merchant Said-bay and shows how compact religious complexes were created in Khiva, combining prayer and educational functions.
For visitors, the layout of the ensemble and its architectural details are of particular interest. The mosque has an open iwan with carved wooden columns, while the slender minaret stands out for its verticality and decorative top. The small size of the complex makes it possible to examine it closely and compare it with the larger buildings of old Khiva.
This place is suitable for those who want to see not only the most famous monuments of Itchan Kala, but also smaller sites that help better understand the religious and urban environment of Khiva in the late 18th and 19th centuries.

When exploring the complex, it is worth paying attention to the combination of several elements within a relatively compact site: a mosque with a domed roof, a two-story madrasa, and a tall minaret. This arrangement clearly shows the traditional Khivan approach to organizing religious space, where a place for prayer, educational rooms, and the vertical landmark of the quarter stood side by side.
The mosque’s northern iwan with wooden columns and carving is especially notable. Inside and outside, the building’s proportions, domed composition, and the restrained decorative finish characteristic of Khorezm are of interest. The minaret, rising more than 30 meters, stands out for its stalactite cornice and arched top, making it easy to view from different nearby points.
A visit is usually combined with a walk through the eastern part of old Khiva. Nearby are the Palvan-Darvaza Gate and other monuments of Itchan Kala, which can be reached on foot in just a few minutes.
The most convenient way to get here is on foot from the center of Khiva and from the main entrances to Itchan Kala, since the historic part of the city is compact and many attractions are located close to one another.
