Itchan Kala Inner City

Itchan Kala Inner City in Khiva, Uzbekistan

Itchan Kala is the inner, most ancient part of Khiva, located in the center of the city and surrounded by massive earthen walls. Behind these walls, a complete historical ensemble has been preserved, where mosques, madrasas, palaces, minarets, mausoleums, caravanserais, and residential houses are concentrated within a relatively small area. Thanks to this level of preservation, Itchan Kala is perceived not as a separate monument, but as a real old city with an established urban environment.

The main appearance of Itchan Kala took shape in the 18th-19th centuries, although the history of Khiva and this fortified core goes back much further. In 1968, the old part of Khiva was granted the status of a protected city, and in 1990, Itchan Kala was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. This site became the first UNESCO World Heritage monument in Central Asia.

For tourists, Itchan Kala is primarily interesting for the opportunity to see the traditional urban layout of Khorezm: narrow streets, inner courtyards, blank facades of residential houses, and monumental public buildings. Among the most notable structures are the fortress gates, minarets, the Juma Mosque with wooden columns, the Tash Khauli Palace, and the Kunya Ark complex. Many monuments are open to visitors, so a walk through Itchan Kala usually combines viewing architecture and museum exhibitions.

Itchan Kala is also associated with local legends about the Kheivak well, which is traditionally linked to the origin of Khiva's name. These stories belong to the oral tradition and complement the historical image of the city. Today, Itchan Kala remains the main place for getting acquainted with Khiva's past and one of the most substantial historical sites in Uzbekistan.

Itchan Kala Inner City

Fortress walls, minarets, and palaces of old Khiva

A walk through Itchan Kala usually begins with an inspection of the fortress walls and gates, which clearly show the layout of the inner city. Inside, a dense network of streets with earthen buildings has been preserved, and the main landmarks are visible from afar - the Kalta Minor minaret, the gate towers, and large domed buildings. Particularly striking is the contrast between the modest residential quarters and the richly decorated facades of madrasas, palaces, and mausoleums.

Several key monuments can be visited within the area. Kunya Ark was the residence of the rulers of Khiva, the courtyards and ceremonial rooms have been preserved in Tash Khauli Palace, and in the Juma Mosque, the forest of wooden columns attracts attention, some of which date from different periods. Many buildings house museums dedicated to the history of Khorezm, crafts, applied arts, and everyday life in old Khiva.

Itchan Kala is convenient for independent exploration on foot: distances here are short, and most of the interesting sites are located close to one another. It is worth allowing several hours for a visit, especially if you plan to climb observation platforms and enter museums. Nearby, already beyond the walls, is the outer part of old Khiva - Dishan Kala, as well as the city's modern districts with hotels, cafes, and transport.

Itchan Kala is located in the historical center of Khiva, and it is usually reached on foot or by taxi from any part of the city. The nearest landmarks for tourists are the main city gates and the central entrances to the museum complex.
