Pigeon Valley is located between Goreme and Uchisar, in one of the most visited parts of Cappadocia. It is an elongated valley about 4 km long, known for its combination of a hiking route, viewpoints, and distinctive tuff rock formations. The upper sections offer views of Uchisar Castle, rocky massifs, and the undulating terrain shaped by volcanic rock and erosion.
The valley got its name from the numerous pigeon houses carved into the soft tuff. In Cappadocia, such niches and small chambers were for a long time part of agriculture: pigeon droppings were collected and used as fertilizer, including in vineyards. On the rock facades, small openings, rows of niches, traces of whitewash, and simple ornamentation, sometimes made with red ochre, are still visible.
The valley is part of the protected area of the UNESCO World Heritage site associated with Goreme National Park and the rock formations of Cappadocia. For tourists, this place is interesting not only for its natural landscape, but also for how traces of the region’s traditional way of life have been preserved here. Here you can walk between two well-known settlements, see historic pigeon houses in their natural setting, and better understand how people adapted to the features of the local terrain.

Route among tuff rocks and old pigeon houses
The main way to explore the valley is to walk it along the trail that connects the surroundings of Goreme and Uchisar. In places, the path runs over dirt and rocky sections, and there are steps, short tunnels, narrow passages, and changes in elevation. After rain, some sections may be slippery, so visitors usually choose shoes with good grip and bring water in warm weather.
During the walk, you can observe rock walls with carved pigeon houses, small windows and niches, as well as the natural tuff formations typical of Cappadocia. At the panoramic platforms along the upper edges of the valley, people often stop for the views of Uchisar and the neighboring ridges. In the valley itself, there are trees, shrubs, and seasonal vegetation, which is especially noticeable in spring and early autumn.
Nearby are Uchisar Castle, the Goreme Open-Air Museum, and several other valleys with hiking routes. Visitors usually come to the valley on foot from Goreme or from the Uchisar side, or drive to one of the upper points by taxi or car and then descend to the trail. On average, 1 to 2 hours are allowed to complete the route, depending on pace and stops at the viewpoints.
When visiting, it is worth keeping in mind that the historic niches and carved spaces are vulnerable to damage. For this reason, it is better not to climb into the old pigeon houses, not to touch the paintings, and not to leave inscriptions on the rock. Spring and autumn are usually considered the most comfortable times for a walk, when temperatures in Cappadocia are milder than during the height of the summer season.
