The Double-Domed Mausoleum of the Shah-i-Zinda Complex
The Double-Domed Mausoleum of the Shah-i-Zinda Complex in Samarkand
The double-domed mausoleum is located within the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble in Samarkand, to the left of the staircase that leads to the central group of mausoleums. It dates back to the 15th century and stands out noticeably in the necropolis due to its composition with two domes. Against the background of the neighboring tombs, the monument attracts attention with its more complex volumetric design and helps to show how diverse the architecture of this complex was.
The history of the mausoleum was interpreted in different ways for a long time. It was previously associated with Qazi-zadeh al-Rumi, a scholar from Ulugh Beg’s circle, but archaeological research in the second half of the 20th century did not confirm this version. Today, the monument is more often regarded as the tomb of Uldjai Inag, the wet nurse of Amir Timur, and her daughter Bibi-Sineb.
For visitors, this mausoleum is interesting not only because of its presumed connection with people from the Timurid circle, but also because of how the understanding of its history has changed. It is especially clear here that Shah-i-Zinda is not a single monument, but a multilayered necropolis, where different structures vary in date of construction, purpose, and artistic techniques.
Viewing the double-domed mausoleum is usually included in a walk through the entire Shah-i-Zinda complex. It is worth considering it as part of the overall route through the ensemble: this makes it easier to see the differences between the mausoleums and to notice the proportions, decoration, and arrangement of the passages between the structures.

The Double-Domed Mausoleum of the Shah-i-Zinda Complex and Its Features
The monument makes it possible to see the architectural differences within the necropolis.
An unusual double-domed composition among the mausoleums of Shah-i-Zinda
When viewing the monument, it is worth paying attention first of all to its volume: the two domes make the silhouette of the mausoleum easily recognizable even within the dense layout of the necropolis. Externally, it is perceived differently from many neighboring tombs, where the emphasis is placed on the portal and cladding. Here, the spatial design plays an important role, thanks to which the mausoleum stands out along the route of the staircases and terraces of the complex.
Visitors can observe the brick base of the building, the proportions of the facade, and how the structure is integrated into the overall rhythm of the passages of Shah-i-Zinda. Even if the interior spaces are not always accessible for detailed viewing, the mausoleum is well perceived from the outside as part of the historical line of development. It is best understood in combination with the neighboring tombs, when it is possible to compare the shapes of the domes, the height of the portals, and the character of the decorative design.
Nearby are other mausoleums of the Shah-i-Zinda ensemble, a mosque, the entrance portal, and viewing areas along the stairway ascent, so a visit to this monument is usually combined with a tour of the entire complex. You can get here from the center of Samarkand by taxi or public transport in the direction of the Shah-i-Zinda complex, and then walk to the entrance.
For a calmer visit, it is better to come at a time when there are fewer groups on the staircases. Since the mausoleum is located at one of the key points of the route, it is convenient to stop here briefly and observe how architectural techniques and ideas about memorial architecture changed within a single necropolis during the Timurid era.
